In a world full of academic analysis and detailed leadership theory (while valuable to an extent) the fine art of common sense is often lost or overlooked altogether.
Starting with a common sense approach can serve you well as you get your footing as a new leader. What would your mother tell you to do? If there is nothing else one can take away from this short post, it is this – don’t be an a**hole.
Be compassionate.
Show empathy.
Listen.
Ask meaningful questions.
Challenge respectfully.
It doesn’t take any extra effort or cost you any money. Even the most grizzled, non-people person can be more ‘leader-like’ by trying one of the above.
Your people need a human leader, not a Hollywood character.
